History of town camps

In 1981, the Australian National University’s Asia Pacific Institute published a book-length history of Alice Springs town camps by Michael Heppell and Julian Wigley. Black Out in Alice contains a wealth of data, including population figures, high-quality black-and-white photographs and architectural plans. It also provides valuable context about local race relations, land rights and the emergence of Tangentyere Council.
